UFC’s early fights appeal to many because of two main reasons. A- It was a no bars hold fight with probably one or two rules where fat people could fight skinny people and huge people could fight tiny people and B- It was a chance for anyone to step in and prove that what they knew was the best fighting style i.e. purists who only trained in one martial art, new martial arts, hybrids, etc

The rules do make for a different kind of fight. Gloves, time limits and weight classes all have an impact. If there were fewer rules then B.J.J. would win more and there’d be less kicking and striking. It’s an interesting question.
Gracie has been in a real street fights, a guy tried car jacking him once, guess what happend to the the car jacker. And a 2×4, hope u come up behind him when he’s asleep an gone when he wakes up, that goes for any of the UFC guys.
he wouldnt and didnt. If you remember a couple years ago royce got back into the octagon for one last time against matt hughes. Matt hughes: whos primarly a wrestler TKOd him like crazy. not to mention when sakuraba made him quit do to leg injury. as a matter of fact sakuraba beat half the gracie family. Gracie jui-juitsu is practically mandatory for most MMA to know nowadays. how ever its deffinitly not the be all on end all of MMA.
everyone says royce gracie is the best fighter i dont agree by todays standards the only reason he so good back then is because brazilian jiujitsu is such a dynamic fighting style and he was the only ufc fighter that knew it unfortunately EVERY fighter knows at least some brazilian jiujitsu nowadays i dont think he would dominate the way he did back then

but it really was better like this. this proves whos actually the ultimate fight with no rules.

but that’s really the point of what i’m saying: no longer is it truly a competition of the world’s best fighter(s). it’s now a competition of the world’s best fighter(s) based on weight classes, with gloves and a host of rules that limit and restrict certain attacks. it’s a prize contest now… not a true gauge of the world’s best fighter.
True the MMA fighters now-a-days would wipe the floor with the old guys, mainly because now everyone knows at least 1 striking style, 1 ground style, and some throwing techniques.
Everyone knows so many arts that the one who wins right now is the one who can deal and take the most damage.
It’s not the least bit pussified. The guys nowdays are real athletes, and would totally own any of the oldschool guys. And besides, what would be the fun in seeing a huge guy smashing a small guy (except the first few times)? It wouldn’t even be a competition.

again i agree: classic UFC was REAL DEAL fighting. no weight classes, a tournament, no gloves, no rules… that’s the way it out to be. UFC nowadays is a pussified version of its tougher, older brother.
it’s pretty silly to say that gracie would fail in a street fight. the classic UFCs were as close to a street fight as you’d see on TV. they’re the ones who wanted rule-free: the real thing. with that said, i loved watching gracie get mangled by matt hughes, but the man was in his 40s then… but you’re right: UFC was a gracie-sponsored event, so there were always questions about the legitimacy of winning an event produced by his own family.
but the dude CAN fight… WELL.
BTW, I hope everyone knows that the first UFS comps were concocted BY the Gracie family merely to promote Gracie JuJitsu. Personally, I wish that last dude had bitten off one of Royce’s fingers. That guy was and still is a pompus bastard who would have had his ass handed to him in a real street fight where there truly are no rules. A 2X4 upside the head would take him down quick.
While I have the utmost respect for modern MMA fighters, UFC 1 was a true competition showcasing DIFFERENT fightng styles. Of course, it also showed how absolutely ineffective most martial arts are in a real fight, especially once that fight ends up on the ground, as most street fights do.
i don’t agree with some of these comments. i started watching ufc since i was younger starting with ufc 1 and the fighters nowadays are machines. their training is brutal, their conditioning is amazing and they all know stand up and ground so there’s alot more competition. though, the random fighting styles of the early days made for great fights.
