Machida is a black belt in Brazilian Jui Jitsu. He would not walk into the octagon if he only knew Karate.
It’s not the art it’s the training methodolog. Unforntunately the art often dictates the methodology. If you look at Machida’s training the method he uses is no different to any other combat sport, but is different to what goes on in most Karate Dojos. Machida’s style is of course karate based, but the point is that he uses a particular training methodology to make it functional, and doesn’t use the way of most TMA schools. Matt Thornton articulated it as aliveness.

How long the fight lasts depends on your skill compared to your opponents, if your a white belt and your opponents bigger, stronger and more athletic, it could take up to 20 mins to finish the fight, if your a black belt against the same guy it would take only 10 seconds lol. SO TRAIN.
