SAPP VS KIMBO
November 4th, 2009 at 7:48 am
Well, for starters, Sapp would have to find a way to cut down to 265lbs. Considering the lightest I’ve seen him was 320lbs and he’s been close to 400lbs, that would probably require some form of amputation.
But ultimately, no, Lesnar is not a slightly tougher and more skilled version of Sapp. Sapp’s martial art style, while in Japan, was listed as “NFL”. I’m not kidding. And it was a fair assessment. He had nothing close to combat training before he started fighting, and according to reports, didn’t really take his training that seriously.
Lesnar, on the other hand, has been wrestling (amateur) since age 5. Wrestling and other takedown-and-top control- centric systems like Judo and Sambo translate extremely well to MMA. Lesnar wasn’t just a good wrestler, he was an NCAA Division I champ and, had he not gone to pro-wrestling for the money, would probably have made the Olympic team. His ground control is just on a different level than most MMA fighters, much less someone who trains haphazardly like Bob Sapp. In addition, he’s at a great MMA gym, training with an Erik Paulson coach who has trained the likes of Sean Sherk, Brock Larson, Derrick Noble, and Kaitlin Young. Add to that the fact that he brings in his old wrestling coach, current Minnessotta wrestlers, and BJJ world champions to work on his game, and he’s clearly more dedicated to MMA than Sapp ever was. To say he’s “more skilled” than Sapp is to call the Atlantic Ocean a great big pond.
While, understandibly, Lesnar’s physical gifts garner a lot of attention and play a big part in his wins, if he was 40lbs lighter, there’s still a good chance he would have beaten Mir. His top control and ground-and-pound is that good.

Well, Sapp may have been able to beat Mir, however he, as a former K-1 guy, never had to fight on the ground, and in the UFC that’s a HUGE disadvantage. Lesnar was a rather good wrestler in college and, thus, is comfortable on the ground. Also, Sapp weighs about 80 pounds more than Mir, so either he’d have to lose weight or Mir would have to gain weight for the fight.

The HW division is the only division where you can outweigh your opponet by 60lbs. So who knows, Sapp could of taken Mir down like Brock did and just pounded him out. Sapp also has better stand up than Brock as he was a good K1 fighter, so he could of beaten Mir standing up.
Its kinda far fetched, but Sapp would have a “punchers chance”

no Sapp sucks. he doesn’t even train anymore, he wont leave japan he’s like a national icon over there. He would get destroyed in the UFC. He was just destroyed by Bobby Lashley.
Sapp is big and slow. And has no gas tank.
Lesnar is HUGE, fast, amazing wrestling, and strength. and improving striking, and submissions.

Bob Sapp would have to cut to much weight. Taking that into consideration along with the fact that he is notorious for bad conditioning i would say no.
Mir would have to weather the early storm and then he would be able to have his way with the slower less skilled Sapp.

sapp is a good comparison for lesnar, but i have to give lesnar the nod for explosivenes. and as you pointed out, wrestling skill. but this is a good question, i think couture could handle sapp better than he did lesnar. but who knows for sure. nice question though.
